Driving Directions: From US 169 in Worth County, go east on Rt. M., which becomes Main St. in Denver. Go south onto Lafayette St. (large brown sign indicates Denver Access), to a left turn onto South St. The area begins on the right in about ¼ mile. Continue to a right turn onto Quarry Ave. and to the entrance on the right.

ADA Information: There are no ADA compliant facilities. Birding from or near a car along the road and campsites gives good views of the grassy area and large trees.

When to Visit/Species to Expect: Only seven dates are represented in eBird reports (April, May, June; one in late January and one in late November). Time spent at the site has been minimal. This pleasant area is deserving of better coverage, because with the habitats present (especially the river frontage), it has good potential for a very good variety of species.

Northern Bobwhite, Belted Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Parula, Swainson’s Thrush, Bobolink and Eastern and Western Meadowlark are among the species seen in sprig and summer. Dark-eyed Junco and Purple Finch were present in late November.

Sparrows include Chipping, Field, American Tree, Savanna, Song and Lark. Also present are Northern Flicker, Red-bellied and Downy Woodpecker, Eastern Kingbird, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Eastern Phoebe, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Dickcissel, Orchard and Baltmore Orioles.

Features of interest to birders: Quarry Rd. is a good vantage point into the scrub and woods along the area’s east side. The access is at a sharp bend in the East Fork of the Grand River; about a third of the acreage is on the far side.   Within the area, the road, campsites and grassy area (5 acres) is level ground with good views into the trees. The boat ramp and a couple short paths give good views of the river.

Toilets: 1 privy (separate for men/women)

Camping: 10 graveled primitive sites with picnic tables.

Hazards/Limitations: None noted other than that the dirt boat ramp has a significant drop off.

Nearby Birding Sites: Worth County Community Lake*, Seat (Emmett and Leah) Mem. CA, Grand Trace CA*, Lotts Creek CA*, Pawnee Prairie NA*, Dunn Ranch Preserve.
