COMAL stands for “challenge of Missouri annual list.” Subscribers to
Missouri Wild Bird Forum share the total number of bird species they have ticked
so far this year. It may seem like an oxymoron to call it a “non-competitive
competition,” but that is just what it is. It stimulates our competitive juices
and motivates us to get out and see birds in Missouri. But it is done in a
relaxed enough way so that none one feels one-upped.
To learn more about Missouri Wild Bird Forum and/or to subscribe to
it, return to the ASM web site Home Page and click “Mobirds listserve”
on the left.
Our thanks go to Susan Hazelwood, compiler of COMAL. Susan writes
the following as her preface for the August update of COMAL:
“Based on the low number of changes to COMAL scores I'm sure most
of us concur with Joe Eades' statement "Adding birds in August was like racing
through molasses." But actually, we shouldn't be crying. Just think of Adam
Nisbett and Patrick Harrison. Neither gained any new species in August. In fact,
each lost one from their totals. Adam realized he had counted one species twice
earlier on. Patrick decided that since others weren't counting the Trumpeter
Swans they had seen he shouldn't either. Backsliding on one's number totals has
to be really, really painful!!!”
